United States GP 2022 - FP1: Sainz on top, young drivers impress

F1 is back in the States for a second time this season, after the Miami GP. Carlos Sainz topped the first practice session of the weekend, followed by Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Carlos Sainz went fastest during the first practice session of the American GP weekend, followed by Max Verstappen in P2 and Lewis Hamilton in P3.

Lance Stroll performed massively, bringing his Aston Martin up to P4, with Sergio Perez right behind him, in P5. Fernando Alonso came sixth, followed by the second Mercedes of George Russell in P7.

Completing the top 10, it was Pierre Gasly in P8, Lando Norris in P9 and Sebastian Vettel in P10.

The Circuit of The Americas became a young-driver-testing venue today, as five teams completed tests with drivers from their young drivers programme, or someone who's associated with the team.

Robert Shwartzman, replacing Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, led the 5, ending up in P16. Following up, Alex Palou, who subbed in for Daniel Ricciardo in McLaren, finished in P17, just ahead of Alfa Romeo's junior driver, Theo Pourchaire in P18, who replaced Valtteri Bottas.

Logan Sargeant replaced Nicholas Latifi and gave himself a first feeling of what his machinery for next season could look like, ending up in P19. Lastly, Antonio Giovinazzi jumped in the VF-22, replacing Kevin Magnussen for the session, but his efforts were cut short, when he spun into the wall at T6, damaging his car's clutch and triggering a red flag, that only lasted for a few minutes.
