Is Fernando Alonso headed back to Le Mans?

Fernando Alonso could be going back to Le Mans again but what is his situation in F1?

Fernando Alonso is currently back in contract negotiations with Alpine to stay in Formula 1 for another few years. The Spaniard is keen to spend a few years in F1 but could also see him back in competing in the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Alonso won the 24 hour race twice back in 2018 and 2019 while driving for Toyota the latter seeing him take a full season in the World Endurance Championship and winning the championship alongside former F1 driver Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima. Alpine currently have a team in WEC competing in the Hypercar class and winning the previous race at Monza.

Both Alpine and Alonso want to be at the front of the field winning however have only season a stroke of success back at last years Qatar Grand Prix. Meanwhile teammate Esteban Ocon took his maiden win last season at a rain soaked Hungarian Grand Prix while Alonso gave Hamilton a fight for the ages during the course of the race.

Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi has also said their has been open discussions about Fernando heading back to sportscars. While talking to reporters he says, “Last year, even when we were discussing the renewal for this year, we talked about the fact Fernando is a legend of the sport but also a legend of the Renault Group.

“For us, he is that champion and he will always have a seat in LMDh. The day he switches, he will be welcome in this team.

“So obviously this is part of the discussion. We actually made that decision also thinking about it in the first place.”

Alpine are currently leading the championship in WEC after winning 2 of 3 rounds so far this season with just 2 rounds to go. The team run a non-hybrid car in LMP1 which are a part of the rules until the end of the season.
