Fernando Alonso moves to Aston Martin for 2023

Fernando Alonso is moving to Aston Martin with a multi year deal. Here is all the details:

Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin caught the F1 world napping on Monday morning as the pair announced that the Spaniard will be leaving Alpine at the end of the season to move to the British sqaud for 2023.

Alonso signed a multi year deal with Aston Martin seeing him compete until he is at least 43 years old. He will be racing the British team until at least 2024 with an option to continue into 2025. The Spaniard is replacing 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel who is retiring at the end of the season after 15 years in F1.

Reports say that Fernando Alonso had only started talking to Aston Martin just last week with the announcement coming quickly after. Alonso sees Aston Martins "absolute commitment to winning" as one of the main reasons for joining the team.

The Spaniard is also hungry for success as he hasn't had a win since Spain 2013 when he was racing for Ferrari. The closest he has come to that was Qatar last year when he finished 3rd for Alpine.

Negotiations apparently broke down quickly between Alonso and his current team Alpine which saw him decide to make the switch. As we reported last week it looked almost certain that Alonso was going to stay with the French outfit and continuing their relationship in F1 but also potentially going to Le Mans racing with the Alpine team in sports cars.

The question that still remain is who will replace Fernando at Alpine. Alpine academy driver and 2021 F2 Champion Oscar Piastri is heavily tipped to take the available seat with others also rumoured to heading to Enstone.

It will be interesting in seeing how the relationship between Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso grows given that the team is currently sitting 2nd off last place in the constructors championship after a tough first half of the 2022 season.
