Canadian GP 2022 - Qualifying: Classy pole in the wet for Verstappen, surprise Alonso P2, Sainz P3

It's another rainy masterclass pole position for Max Verstappen, with a very quick Fernando Alonso in P2 and Carlos Sainz in P3.

Q1: Very short on visibility and a lot of standing water on the track, as the first part of qualifying began. All drivers completed their laps on full wets, with Verstappen logging a 1:32.219, topping the timesheets. Eliminated in Q1: Pierre Gasly (P16), Sebastian Vettel (P17), Lance Stroll (P18), Nicholas Latifi (P19) and Yuki Tsunoda (P20).

Q2: Mixed tyre choices for the start Q2, as the rain seemed to have stopped and the track conditions improved. The session was stopped with 9:06 to go, when Sergio Perez lost the brakes and went straight into the barriers at turn 3, not able to get going again. The barriers were repaired and the session was resumed, with 9 minutes to go. Eliminated in Q2: Valtteri Bottas (P11), Alex Albon (P12), Sergio Perez (P13), Lando Norris (P14), who reported some power unit issues, and wasn't able to put in a complete lap, and Charles Leclerc (P15), who

Q3: With the track drying up and a dry line forming, all drivers switched to inters. Max Verstappen drove to perfection in the wet, in arguably one of his greatest qualifying performances in a while. Fernando Alonso in P2, converted all that promising pace he showed in all 3 practice sessions into pure speed, followed by his fellow compatriot, Carlos Sainz in P3.

Lewis Hamilton managed to climb up to P4, brilliantly followed by both Haas cars, with Kevin Magnussen in P5, leading Mick Schumacher in P6. Esteban Ocon in P7, just ahead of George Russell, who took a gamble and went for a fresh set of slicks, not very appropriate for the track conditions at the time. He spun off at turn 2 and touched the barrier with his rear wing, luckily escaping without much damage, staying in P8. Completing the top 10, Daniel Ricciardo in P9 and Guanyu Zhou in P10.
